PENCH NATIONAL PARK (M.P)

The area of the Pench Tiger Reserve and the surrounding area is the real story area of Rudyard Kipling's famous "The Jungle Book". The idea of Mongali is made from the pamphlet "An Account of Wolves's Nurturing Children in their Dens" by Sir William Henry Sliman. In 1831 there was a report of the arrest of a child who had grown up with wolves in village Satbavadi near Seoni. The place described in "The Jungle Book", the Vainganga River, its valley where Sher Khan was killed, the mountain ranges of village Kannivara and Sivani etc. are the actual places in the Seoni district. The forest areas of the Pench Tiger Reserve have a glorious history. Its natural beauty and richness is described in the Ain-i-Akbari and many other natural history books such as R.A. Strenthal's "Sivni, Camp life in the Satpura", James Forsyth "High Lands of Central India" and A. A Dunbar Brander "Wild Animals of Central India" etc. Pench Tiger Reserve was awarded to "Best Maintain Tourist Friendly National Park" Award under the National Tourism Prize 2006-07.

The national park is home to flora species like Mahua, White Kulu, Salai, Saja, Bijiyasal, Dhaora, Amaltas and many other. Apart from trees, the park is filled with grasslands, plants and saplings. Pench National Park is a residence of a great variety of wildlife. The place is an abode of real Sher Khans (Bengal Tigers) accompanied by Chital, Jungle Cat, Wolf, Indian Leopard, Gaur, Four-horned Antelope, Sloth Bear and many other wildlife. Also a great variety of birds like Crow Pheasant, Peafowl, Pintail, Lesser Whistling Teal, Indian Roller, Wagtail, Munia, Waterfowl, Blue Kingfisher, Crimson-Breasted Barbet, Red-Vented Bulbul are found here. Though this national park is considered a major part of Madhya Pradesh since it lies in Seoni and Chhindwara district but the park also shares a part of Maharashtra. An additional area of 257 sq km lies in Maharashtra and is accessible from Madhya Pradesh also. Also the beauty of this place has been mentioned in the classic “ The Jungle Book” by the great Rudyard Kipling.

    Nagpur is the nearest railway station at an approximate distance of 130kms with well connected railway facility.     The predominant vegetation of Pench National Park is Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest, with Teak (Tectona grandis) as the dominant species forming the upper canopy. The forest is classified into
