Satpura Tiger Reserve (STR) also known as Satpura National Park is located in the Hoshangabad District (newly named Narmadapuram ) of Madhya Pradesh in India. Its name is derived from the Satpura range. It covers an area of 524 km2 (202 sq mi). Satpura National Park, along with the adjoining Bori and Pachmarhi wildlife sanctuaries, provides 2,200 km2 (850 sq mi) of unique central Indian highland ecosystem. It was set up in 1981. The terrain of the national park is extremely rugged and consists of sandstone peaks, narrow gorges, ravines and dense forests. The altitude ranges from 300 to 1,352 metres (984 to 4,436 ft). It has Dhoopgarh peak as high as 1,350 metres (4,430 ft) and the almost level plains of Churna.

    On arrival at Bhopal railway station/airport, meet our travel guide who will be there for your welcome and thereafter to take you to Madhai range of Satpura, which is about 4-hour drive.     We will start our day a little early in the morning today and proceed for morning Jeep Safari that will help you in exploring the wilds in woods. Afterwards, return back to the hotel for lunch. After lunch in the afternoon, we will leave for Elephant Safari/ Canoe Safari/ Walking Safari /Jeep Safari as per the schedule. Safari is the best way of exploring each and every corner of Satpura.     Forest Rules

    It is essential to cross the river Denwa in order to go for the jeep safari from Madhai entrance gate. This river acts as a natural boundary around the national park. It is one of the few national parks in India which is surrounded by a river and offers river crossing.

For instance, the temperatures during morning safari in winters can be extremely low, so you will need layers of clothing. 3. Avoid wearing bright colors during jungle safari to avoid catching the attention of dangerous animals. 4. Do not feed animals. 5. Do not litter the jungle area. 6. Do not touch any animal during jungle safari regardless of how harmless it may seem. 7. Avoid using the camera flash as it may startle animals. 8. Keep the camera handy to avoid missing out on an opportunity to click an exotic animal. 9. Do not make noise and keep your phone on silent mode while in the jungle to ensure safety. 10. Do not step out of the vehicle without your guide’s permission as it may be risky.

    Forest Features

    Its name is derived from the Satpura Range. Satpura is a Sanskrit word, that means seven mountains (sapta – seven and pura – mountain). It was first explored by Captain James Forsyth of Bengal Lancers in 1862 while he was searching for Indian Freedom Fighter Tantya Tope.[3] It is one of the first declared Reserved Forest Area of India due to its ecological and commercial importance. It became a Tiger Reserve in the year 2000 and therefore it is also called Satpura Tiger Reserve (STR). Satpura National Park, with inclusion of Pachmarhi & Bori Sanctuaries, Satpura Tiger Reserve it covers 1427 km2 of Hoshangabad and Chhindwara Districts of Madhya Pradesh.

    The best time to visit Satpura National Park is from October to June. The national park is open throughout the year for the visitors except for the monsoon season. During the summer season (May to June) the climate remains pleasant with temperatures hovering around 35 degree Celsius. The probability of sighting tiger increases during this season as they can be spotted during water bodies. The backwaters and the dense jungle help the temperature to fall after the sunset. Whereas, during winters (November to February) the temperature drops to as low as 4 degree Celsius at night. Days of winters offer tourists a pleasant and cozy climate.

    Satpura Tiger Reserve is a part of a rich Central Indian forest ecosystem thus it is quite rich in biodiversity. Satpura Tiger Reserve has over 1300 species of plants which comprises of teak, Sal, ten

    Satpura national park, along with its surrounding buffer-zone area have a large and diversified population of wildlife which are rarely seen in other national parks. This forest area is unique in its ecosystem and has a long history of wildlife conservation which is evident from the list of wildlife species currently present. The fauna of Satpura National Park is a stunning jungle treat for wildlife enthusiasts. There are 50 species of mammals, 254 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles, and 50 species of butterflies that are found in the park. Beautiful birds species including Malabar whistling Thrush, Paradise Fly-catcher, Honey Buzzard, Malabar pied Hornbill etc. are present in large numbers. There is presence of wide variety of flower species and moist conditions thus are ideal conditions for various butterfly species to flourish like Oakleaf, Black Rajah, Great Eggfly, Blue Pancy etc. Along with birds and butterflies its fauna comprises Spotted Deer, Indian Bison (Gaur), Tigers, Leopards, Wild boar, Wild dog (locally called Dholes), Sloth bear, Black buck (unique attraction), Porcupine, Sambhar, Barasingha,[5] four Horned antelopes (Chowsingha), Pangolin, Marsh crocodile, Languars etc. There are about 14 species of endangered mammals and reptiles in the Satpura Tiger reserve. Indian Giant squirrel is one of the special feature of Satpura Tiger Reserve as it is rare in India now.[6] Some of the species like Indian giant squirrels, Flying squirrels, Rhesus monkeys are endemic to the Central India.
